Root Canal Therapy
A root canal sounds scary, but it is a routine treatment that relieves pain and saves your natural tooth. At Edmonton West Dental in NW Edmonton, we use local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable, and the treatment is usually completed in a single appointment.

Urgent Dental Care
What Is a Root Canal?
Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp. When deep decay, a crack or an injury lets bacteria reach it, the pulp can become infected. A root canal removes the infected tissue, cleans the inside of the tooth and seals it so the tooth can stay in your mouth.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
- A toothache that is constant or wakes you at night
- Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
- Pain when you bite or press on the tooth
- A darkening tooth
- A swollen or tender gum near the tooth
If the swelling is spreading on your face or neck, or you have a fever, call us right away or see our Emergency Dentist page.
How a Root Canal Works
- 01Exam and X-ray to confirm the problem.
- 02Local anaesthetic so the area is numb.
- 03Removal of the infected pulp and careful cleaning of the canals.
- 04Sealing of the tooth.
- 05Restoration, usually with a crown, to protect the tooth long term.
Comfort During Treatment
Modern root canal treatment feels much like having a filling placed. If you are nervous, ask us about sedation dentistry.

Root Canal FAQs
Is a root canal painful?
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, so the treatment itself should be comfortable. Mild discomfort for a few days afterward is normal.
How long does a root canal take?
It is usually done in a single appointment. Some cases need a second visit.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?
Often, yes. A crown protects the treated tooth from cracking. Your dentist will advise you.
Can I just have the tooth pulled instead?
That is an option, but saving your natural tooth is usually better for chewing and for neighbouring teeth. We will talk through both.
Will insurance cover a root canal?
Many plans do. We offer direct billing and will check your coverage first.
What happens if I leave an infected tooth untreated?
The infection can spread and cause more pain, swelling and damage. Early treatment is simpler.
