What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

  • A knocked-out tooth
  • A cracked or broken tooth
  • Severe or constant toothache
  • Swelling in the face, gums or jaw
  • A lost filling or crown
  • Bleeding that will not stop after a mouth injury

If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or a serious injury to your head or face, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911.

Emergency Dentist vs. Urgent Dental Care

An emergency is trauma, severe pain or spreading swelling that needs attention right away. If your problem needs prompt but planned treatment, such as a root canal or wisdom tooth removal, see our Urgent Dental Care page.

What to Do Until You See Us

Knocked-Out Tooth

  1. 01Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root.
  2. 02If it is dirty, rinse gently with milk or water. Do not scrub it.
  3. 03If you can, place it back in the socket and hold it there; otherwise keep it in milk.
  4. 04Call us immediately. Time matters.

Cracked or Broken Tooth

  1. 01Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  2. 02Apply a cold pack to the cheek to reduce swelling.
  3. 03Save any pieces and bring them with you.
  4. 04Call us as soon as possible.

Lost Filling or Crown

  1. 01Keep the crown if you have it, and bring it with you.
  2. 02Avoid chewing on that side.
  3. 03Do not use household glue. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can be used for comfort.
  4. 04Call us to book a repair; a crown can often be re-fitted or replaced.

Toothache or Swelling

  1. 01Rinse with warm salt water.
  2. 02Floss gently to remove trapped food.
  3. 03Use a cold pack on the outside of the cheek and take pain relief as directed.
  4. 04Do not place aspirin directly on the gum.
  5. 05Call us. Toothaches often signal infection, and may need a root canal or extraction.

What Happens When You Call

  1. 01Call us. Tell us what happened and how you feel.
  2. 02We book you in. We will give you the earliest time and advice for the meantime.
  3. 03We treat the problem. We relieve pain first, then explain the next steps and costs.

Before Your Emergency Visit

  • Call ahead if possible so we can prepare.
  • Bring any broken pieces or the lost crown.

After Your Emergency Treatment

  • Avoid chewing on the treated area until we say it is safe.
  • Take pain relief as directed.
  • Book any follow-up treatment, such as a crown or root canal, soon.
  • Call us if pain, swelling or fever gets worse.
