Dental Crowns & Bridges

A dental crown encases a damaged tooth, restoring its strength and natural shape. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring to the crowns on neighbouring teeth, giving you a fixed, non-removable solution. At Edmonton West Dental in NW Edmonton, we use durable ceramic and zirconia materials and work conservatively to protect healthy tooth structure. We are accepting new patients, so book a crown consultation if a tooth needs protection or a gap needs filling.

What Crowns and Bridges Are, and Who Needs Them

A crown is a cap placed over a tooth that is cracked, badly decayed, worn, weakened by a large filling or treated with a root canal. A bridge replaces a missing tooth with a replacement tooth held in place by crowns on the teeth next to the gap. Your dentist will recommend a crown or bridge only when it is the right way to protect or restore your teeth.

Signs You May Need a Crown or Bridge

  • A cracked, broken or heavily worn tooth
  • A large cavity or an old filling that is failing
  • A tooth that has had a root canal and needs protection
  • A gap from a missing tooth that affects chewing or your smile
  • A crown that has come loose or fallen out

How the Treatment Works

  1. 01Exam and plan. Your dentist examines the tooth, reviews your X-rays and explains your options.
  2. 02Tooth preparation. The tooth is numbed and shaped so the crown can fit. For a bridge, the neighbouring teeth are prepared.
  3. 03Impressions. Precise records are taken and sent to a quality dental lab.
  4. 04Temporary crown. A well-fitted temporary is placed right away to protect the tooth.
  5. 05Final fitting. The final crown or bridge is checked for fit, bite and shade, then cemented in place, usually within 1 to 2 weeks.

Materials and Comfort

We use durable ceramic and zirconia materials that hold up to everyday biting forces and can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth. If you feel anxious about treatment, ask us about sedation dentistry.

Before Your Visit

  • Bring your insurance card, or both cards if you have two plans.
  • Tell us about your health history and medications.
  • If a crown has come off, bring it with you in a clean container and avoid using glue to put it back.
  • Eat before your appointment, because your mouth will be numb afterward.
  • Write down any questions about timing, shade or cost.

After Your Treatment

  • Avoid chewing until the numbness has worn off so you do not bite your cheek or tongue.
  • While you have a temporary crown, avoid very sticky or hard foods and chew on the other side.
  • Brush normally and floss carefully. Slide the floss out sideways rather than pulling up on a temporary crown.
  • Mild sensitivity to hot or cold can occur after treatment and usually settles.
  • Call us if the temporary comes off, your bite feels uneven, or you have swelling, fever or lasting pain.

Cost, Insurance and Direct Billing

We follow the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide and give you a written treatment plan before work begins. We bill major insurance providers directly and verify your coverage first. We also welcome patients covered by NIHB, the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), the Alberta Adult Health Benefit and WCB for approved claims. We offer flexible payment options for any uncovered amount.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a dental crown last?

With good oral hygiene, a well-placed crown typically lasts 10 to 15 years or longer. We use durable ceramic and zirconia materials.

Can I get a same-day crown?

We work with quality dental labs for fast turnaround. For many crowns, we place a well-fitted temporary immediately and the final crown is ready within 1 to 2 weeks.

Does getting a crown hurt?

The tooth is numbed first, so you should not feel pain during treatment. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually passes.

What is the difference between a crown and a bridge?

A crown covers and protects one tooth. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by attaching to the crowns on neighbouring teeth.

What should I do if my crown falls off?

Keep the crown and call us. We will cement it back or place a protective temporary until a permanent fix is ready. See our Emergency Dentist page for details.

Are crowns and bridges covered by insurance?

Many plans cover part of the cost. We confirm your benefits and tell you your portion before treatment.
