What Professional Whitening Is and Who It Suits
Professional whitening uses dentist-supervised whitening gel to lighten the natural shade of your teeth. It works well for surface stains and general yellowing. It suits most healthy adults, but it does not change the colour of crowns, fillings or veneers, and results depend on the cause of the stain. Your dentist will check your teeth and gums first and tell you what to expect.
Your Whitening Options
- In-office whitening: a supervised treatment in our clinic that takes about an hour.
- Take-home whitening trays: custom-fitted trays you wear for 30 to 60 minutes a day over 1 to 2 weeks. Custom trays reduce gum irritation compared with generic strips or one-size trays.
Most patients see noticeable results within a few sessions. We adjust the concentration and duration to your sensitivity level so you get real results comfortably.
Whitening for Sensitive Teeth
Yes, whitening can be done with the right protocol. We assess sensitivity first and adjust the treatment accordingly, and many patients with sensitive teeth do very well with a slower, lower-concentration approach.
Our Current Whitening Offer
A free take-home teeth whitening kit is currently available with new adult patient exams and hygiene appointments. Offers can change, so please ask our front desk when you book.
Before Your Visit
- Tell us if your teeth are sensitive, and about any gum problems or cavities you know about.
- Have a check-up and cleaning first if you can, since whitening works best on clean teeth and healthy gums.
- Tell us about crowns, veneers or fillings on your front teeth, because they will not whiten.
- Bring your insurance card, or both cards if you have two plans.
- Think about the shade you would like and tell us your goals.
After Your Treatment
- Teeth can feel sensitive for a day or two. Use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth if your dentist suggests one.
- For the first couple of days, limit coffee, tea, red wine, dark sauces and tobacco, which stain quickly.
- Follow the wear time and instructions for your trays exactly, and do not overuse them.
- Keep up good brushing and flossing, and keep your regular cleanings to maintain your results.
- Call us if sensitivity is severe or lasts, or if your gums are sore or irritated.
Cost, Insurance and Payment
We follow the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide and give you a clear estimate before treatment. Whitening is usually considered cosmetic and is often not covered by insurance. We will tell you your cost in advance and offer flexible payment options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is whitening included with my cleaning?
A free take-home whitening kit is currently available with new adult patient exams and hygiene appointments. Please ask our front desk at your appointment.
How long does professional whitening take?
In-office treatment takes about an hour. Take-home trays are worn for 30 to 60 minutes a day over 1 to 2 weeks. Most patients see noticeable results within a few sessions.
Is professional teeth whitening safe for sensitive teeth?
Yes, with the right protocol. We assess sensitivity first and adjust the concentration and duration. Custom-fitted trays also reduce gum irritation.
Is professional whitening better than store-bought kits?
Professional whitening is supervised by your dentist, uses custom-fitted trays and delivers better and longer-lasting results than most over-the-counter options.
How long do whitening results last?
Results vary with your habits. Limiting coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco and keeping up regular cleanings helps your results last.
Will whitening work on crowns or veneers?
No. Whitening only changes the shade of natural tooth structure. Your dentist can explain options if you have restorations on your front teeth.
