Composite Bonding

Composite bonding is a single-appointment cosmetic fix for chips, minor gaps and discolouration. Tooth-coloured resin is shaped and polished directly on your tooth, with no lab time and no waiting. At Edmonton West Dental in NW Edmonton, we use dental bonding to repair small imperfections so they blend naturally with the rest of your smile. We are accepting new patients, so book a bonding appointment to get started.

What Bonding Is and Who It Is For

In bonding, your dentist applies a tooth-coloured composite resin to the tooth, sculpts it into shape, hardens it with a special light and polishes it. It suits people who want a quick, conservative cosmetic repair, such as a chipped front tooth, a small gap, or a tooth with a stain that whitening cannot fix. Because it is built directly on the tooth, little or no tooth reduction is usually needed.

What Bonding Can Fix

  • Chipped or cracked teeth, including a chipped front tooth
  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Discolouration on individual teeth
  • Worn or uneven tooth edges
  • Teeth that look slightly short or misshapen

How the Treatment Works

  1. 01Consultation. Your dentist reviews your goals and confirms that bonding is the right option. Numbing is often not needed.
  2. 02Shade matching. A resin colour is chosen to match your tooth.
  3. 03Preparation. The tooth surface is lightly prepared so the resin bonds well.
  4. 04Shaping. The resin is applied, sculpted and hardened with a special light.
  5. 05Polish and bite check. We polish the tooth so it blends with the surrounding tooth and check your bite.

Bonding Compared With Veneers and Whitening

Bonding is faster and more conservative than veneers, and it can fix small shape problems that whitening cannot. For larger changes or longer-lasting colour correction, your dentist may suggest porcelain veneers. Whitening lightens natural tooth shade but does not repair chips.

Before Your Visit

  • Tell us what you want to change and bring a photo if it helps.
  • Consider whitening first if you want your teeth lighter, because the resin shade is matched to your current teeth.
  • Tell us about your health history and any teeth grinding.
  • Bring your insurance card, or both cards if you have two plans.

After Your Treatment

  • You can usually eat and drink as soon as you leave, unless you were numbed.
  • For the first couple of days, limit coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco, which can stain resin.
  • Avoid biting hard objects such as ice, pens and fingernails.
  • Brush gently and floss daily, and keep your regular check-ups so we can check the bonding.
  • Call us if the bonded area chips, feels rough or uneven, or you have lasting pain or swelling.

Cost, Insurance and Payment

We follow the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide and give you an estimate before treatment. When bonding repairs a damaged tooth, some insurance plans may cover part of the cost. When it is purely cosmetic, it may not be covered. We will check your benefits, bill directly where coverage applies, and offer flexible payment options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can bonding fix a chipped front tooth?

Yes. Composite bonding is a common same-day fix for small chips. We sculpt and polish the resin to blend with the surrounding tooth.

How long does dental bonding take?

Bonding is typically completed in a single appointment, because the resin is shaped and polished directly on your tooth with no lab time.

Does dental bonding hurt?

Bonding is usually comfortable, and numbing is often not needed. Your dentist will tell you if it is required for your tooth.

How long does bonding last?

It varies with your habits and the tooth. Avoiding hard objects, limiting staining foods and attending regular check-ups help it last. Your dentist can repair or replace bonding if it wears.

Can bonding close gaps between teeth?

Yes, for minor gaps. Larger changes may be better handled with veneers, and your dentist will explain the options.

Is bonding covered by insurance?

It depends on whether the work is cosmetic or repairs damage. We check your benefits and tell you your cost before we begin.
