Bad Breath (Halitosis) Treatment
Persistent bad breath, also called halitosis, is almost always caused by bacteria on the tongue, between the teeth or below the gumline. At Edmonton West Dental in NW Edmonton, we find the source and address it directly, rather than masking the symptom. We are accepting new patients, and our approach is judgment-free. If you are tired of chewing gum and mouthwash that do not solve the problem, book a bad breath consultation.

Gum Disease and Bad Breath
What Halitosis Is and Who It Affects
Everyone has morning breath or occasional bad breath after certain foods. Chronic bad breath is different. It lingers even after brushing, flossing and mouthwash. It affects people of all ages and is often a sign that bacteria are building up somewhere in the mouth. Finding where is the first step to treating it.
Common Causes of Bad Breath
- Bacteria coating the tongue
- Plaque and food trapped between the teeth
- Gum disease and tartar below the gumline
- Cavities or old restorations that trap bacteria
- A dry mouth, smoking or tobacco use
- Certain foods, drinks and some medications
How We Find and Treat the Cause
- 01Conversation. We ask about when you notice it, your habits, your health and your medications.
- 02Exam. Your dentist checks your teeth, gums, tongue and any restorations, and reviews your X-rays.
- 03Treatment of the cause. This may be a professional cleaning, treatment for gum disease such as scaling and root planing, or repair of a cavity.
- 04Home care plan. We show you how to clean your tongue and between your teeth effectively.
- 05Follow-up. We check your progress and adjust the plan if needed.
If your dentist suspects the cause lies outside your mouth, they may suggest you speak with your doctor.
Before Your Visit
- Note when you notice the bad breath and what makes it better or worse.
- Make a list of your medications and any health conditions.
- Brush and floss as usual. Do not mask the odour with mints or strong mouthwash right before your visit.
- Bring your insurance card, or both cards if you have two plans.
After Your Treatment
- Brush twice a day and clean your tongue gently every day.
- Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes.
- Drink plenty of water and limit sugary drinks, tobacco and alcohol.
- If you had a deep cleaning, expect mild tenderness for a day or two, and follow the aftercare instructions we give you.
- Keep regular check-ups, and call us if the problem returns or if you have swelling, fever or lasting pain.
Cost, Insurance and Direct Billing
Many insurance plans cover exams, cleanings and gum treatment, and we handle the paperwork with direct billing to NIHB and insurance. We follow the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide, confirm your coverage in advance and tell you your portion before treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What causes persistent bad breath?
Persistent bad breath is almost always caused by bacteria on the tongue, between the teeth or below the gumline.
Can gum disease cause bad breath?
Yes. Bacteria and tartar below the gumline are a common cause, which is why gum treatment can help.
Will mouthwash get rid of bad breath?
Mouthwash may freshen your breath briefly, but it does not remove the cause. Finding and treating the source gives lasting results.
How can I tell if I have bad breath?
It can be hard to tell on your own. A trusted friend or your dentist can let you know honestly, and we will never judge.
How long does it take to treat bad breath?
It depends on the cause. A cleaning and better home care can help quickly, and gum treatment may take a few visits.
Is bad breath treatment covered by insurance?
Treatment of the cause, such as cleanings or gum care, is often covered. We verify your benefits and tell you your portion first.
