Children’s dentistry Edmonton
The questions parents ask us most
Edmonton West Dental has a dedicated pediatric dentist, Dr. Strater Crowfoot DDS MSD, who completed his pediatric specialty training at Saint Louis University. Below are the questions our front desk and dental team answer every week. If your question is not here, call us.

Before the visit
When should my child first see a dentist?
The Canadian Dental Association recommends a first dental visit within six months of your child's first tooth appearing, or by age one — whichever comes first. Early visits are short, gentle, and mostly about building comfort. Dr. Crowfoot at Edmonton West Dental sees infants and toddlers regularly and makes these first appointments feel like an adventure rather than a clinical event.
How do I prepare my anxious child for a dental appointment?
The most effective approach is normalization before the visit. Read books about the dentist, play pretend dentist at home, and talk about it matter-of-factly rather than offering reassurances like 'it won't hurt' (which can actually signal that pain is possible). On appointment day, arrive a few minutes early so your child can get comfortable in the reception area before the appointment begins. Our team at Edmonton West Dental works with anxious kids every day and uses a tell-show-do approach throughout.
Should I stay with my child during the appointment?
For young children, yes. We encourage parents to sit with toddlers and early school-age children during the exam. For older children and teens, we typically find they respond better when given a little independence in the chair — but we always follow the child's and parent's lead. There is no pressure either way.
During treatment
How long is a typical children's dental appointment?
A standard cleaning and check-up for a child runs 30 to 45 minutes. We never rush. If your child needs more time to settle in, we build that in rather than pressing forward before they are ready. Restorative appointments (fillings, sealants) typically run 45 to 60 minutes depending on the complexity.
Do you offer sedation for children?
Yes. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available for children who experience significant anxiety or who need more extensive treatment. It is mild, safe, and wears off within minutes after the mask is removed. We discuss sedation options with parents in detail before proceeding — it is never done without your consent and a clear explanation of what to expect.
What if my child cries during the appointment?
Crying is completely normal and expected, especially for younger children or first-time visitors. Our team is experienced and patient. We never shame or hurry a child through discomfort. If a child is genuinely overwhelmed, we stop, give them time to settle, and reassess together with the parent. A partial appointment done calmly is far better than a complete one done under stress.
Costs & insurance
Is children's dentistry covered by insurance?
Most employer dental plans cover a significant portion of children's preventive care, including cleanings, exams, and X-rays. Coverage for restorative work (fillings, extractions) varies by plan. Edmonton West Dental direct-bills all major insurance providers, so you only pay your share at checkout. We verify your coverage before treatment begins.
Do you accept NIHB (Non-Insured Health Benefits) for children?
Yes. Edmonton West Dental is a registered NIHB provider. For eligible First Nations and Inuit children, we bill the NIHB program directly. Most covered services cost nothing out of pocket to the family. If you are unsure whether your child qualifies or what is covered, call our front desk and we will walk you through it before the appointment.
What does a first visit cost without insurance?
The cost varies depending on what is completed at the first appointment, but Edmonton West Dental follows the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide, which means pricing is transparent and predictable. For an accurate estimate before your visit, call us at 780-652-1280. We would rather give you a clear number in advance than surprise you at checkout.
Do you accept the Canada Dental Care Plan for children?
Yes. For eligible families, Edmonton West Dental accepts the Canada Dental Care Plan and submits claims on your behalf. If you are enrolled and unsure whether your child qualifies, our front desk team can help confirm eligibility before the appointment.
At-home care
When should kids start brushing, and do they need help?
Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears — even before age one. Use a soft infant toothbrush with a smear of fluoride toothpaste the size of a grain of rice. Children do not develop the fine motor skills for effective independent brushing until around age 7 or 8, so parents should assist or supervise until then. Two minutes, twice a day is the goal.
Are baby teeth really that important if they fall out anyway?
Baby teeth matter far more than people realize. They hold space for adult teeth, guide proper eruption, and support normal speech and chewing development. A baby tooth lost too early due to decay can allow neighbouring teeth to shift and crowd adult teeth that have not yet come in. Protecting them is not just about the temporary teeth — it directly affects how your child's permanent smile develops.
How can I help prevent cavities at home?
Four habits make the biggest difference: brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss once a day once teeth are touching, limit sugary drinks (especially juice and sports drinks), and come in every six months for a check-up and cleaning. Sealants on the back molars are also highly effective at preventing cavities in the deep grooves where brushing does not always reach — ask Dr. Crowfoot whether your child is a good candidate.
