When Should My Child First See a Dentist?

Bring your child within six months of their first tooth coming in, or by their first birthday. Early visits help your child get used to the dental office, and give you tips on brushing, feeding and habits like thumb sucking.

A Calm, Gentle Experience

We take our time, explain what we are doing in simple words and let children set the pace. Nitrous oxide may be available for children with parental consent. Please ask our team if you think your child would benefit.

Before Your Child's Visit

  • Talk about the visit in a positive way and avoid words like "pain" or "shot".
  • Bring your child's health information and any medications list.
  • Bring your insurance or NIHB details.
  • Have your child brush before arriving.

After Your Child's Visit

  • Teeth may feel a little sensitive after a cleaning or fluoride; this passes quickly.
  • If fluoride was applied, avoid food and drinks for the time we advise.
  • If your child was numbed, watch that they do not bite their lip or cheek.
  • Keep up twice-daily brushing and daily flossing.

Cost, NIHB and Direct Billing

We bill insurance directly and accept NIHB. Families typically pay nothing for covered services. We also accept CDCP and Alberta Adult Health Benefit. We follow the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide.

Children's Dentistry FAQs

How often should my child see the dentist?

Most children benefit from a check-up and cleaning about every six months. We will advise what is best for your child.

My child is nervous. What can I do?

Stay positive, keep the explanation simple and tell us about your child's worries. We will go slowly.

Can I stay with my child during the visit?

Yes. Parents are welcome to stay with their child.

Do you accept NIHB for children?

Yes. We accept NIHB and bill directly.

Are dental X-rays safe for kids?

We use digital X-rays that use up to 80% less radiation, and only take them when needed.

How can I prevent cavities in my child?

Brush twice daily with an appropriate amount of fluoride toothpaste, limit sugary snacks and drinks, and book regular visits. Sealants and fluoride can help too.
