Scaling & Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)
Scaling and root planing is a deep-clean procedure that removes tartar buildup from below the gumline and smooths root surfaces to discourage future bacterial attachment. At Edmonton West Dental in NW Edmonton, we offer deep teeth cleaning for patients with gum disease, whether it is early or more established. We are accepting new patients, and you will not be judged if it has been a while since your last cleaning.

Gum Disease and Bad Breath
What Scaling and Root Planing Is, and Who Needs It
A regular cleaning treats the parts of the teeth you can see. When tartar and bacteria collect below the gumline, the gums become inflamed and pull away from the teeth, forming pockets. Scaling removes the buildup from the tooth and root surfaces. Root planing then smooths the roots so the gums can heal and reattach more easily. Your dentist may recommend it if you have signs of gum disease, such as bleeding or swollen gums, bad breath or gum recession.
Signs You May Need a Deep Cleaning
- Bleeding gums when you brush or floss
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Deeper gum pockets found during your exam
- Tartar below the gumline seen on X-rays
How the Procedure Works
- 01Exam and measurements. Your dentist checks gum pockets and reviews your X-rays.
- 02Numbing. We thoroughly numb the area before starting so you stay comfortable.
- 03Scaling. Tartar and bacteria are removed from below the gumline.
- 04Root planing. The root surfaces are smoothed.
- 05Aftercare. We explain how to care for your teeth and gums as they heal.
Scaling and root planing is usually done in two appointments, one side of the mouth at a time.
Comfort and Sedation Options
Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are available for anxious patients or complex periodontal work. Tell us how you feel and we will help you choose.
Before Your Visit
- Eat beforehand, since your mouth will be numb afterward.
- Share your health history and medications, including anything that thins your blood.
- Bring your insurance card, or both cards if you have two plans.
- Keep brushing and flossing as usual. Do not stop even if your gums bleed.
- If you are anxious, ask about sedation options before the day of treatment.
After Your Treatment
- Avoid chewing until the numbness has worn off.
- Expect mild tenderness for a day or two, which resolves on its own. Teeth may feel sensitive to hot and cold.
- Eat soft foods at first and avoid very hot, spicy or crunchy foods for a day or so.
- Brush gently with a soft brush and clean between your teeth daily, as your dentist shows you.
- Follow the aftercare instructions we provide, and book your follow-up visit.
- Call us if you have swelling, fever, lasting pain or bleeding that does not settle.
Cost, Insurance and Direct Billing
Periodontal treatment is covered under many insurance plans, and we handle the paperwork, including direct billing to NIHB and insurance. CDCP covers cleanings and scaling, subject to plan guidelines. We follow the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide and tell you your portion before we begin.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does scaling and root planing hurt?
We numb the area thoroughly before starting. Most patients feel mild tenderness for a day or two afterward, which resolves on its own.
How long does scaling and root planing take?
It is usually done in two appointments, one side of the mouth at a time. Your dentist will confirm the plan for you.
What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular cleaning treats the visible tooth surfaces. A deep cleaning removes tartar from below the gumline and smooths the roots, to treat gum disease.
Will my gums bleed after a deep cleaning?
Some light bleeding or tenderness can happen for a short time. If bleeding is heavy or does not settle, call us.
Is deep cleaning covered by insurance?
Many plans cover it. We verify your benefits, bill directly and tell you your portion in advance.
How often will I need a deep cleaning?
Once gum disease is under control, regular maintenance cleanings help keep it stable. Your dentist will recommend a schedule for you.
