Sealants & Fluoride for Kids
Cavities are one of the most common childhood health problems, and most are preventable. At Edmonton West Dental in NW Edmonton, we use dental sealants and fluoride to give your child's teeth extra protection.

What Are Dental Sealants?
A sealant is a thin, protective coating placed on the chewing surfaces of back teeth. Those teeth have deep grooves where food and bacteria hide, and a toothbrush cannot always reach them. Sealing the grooves helps keep decay out. Read more in our article on why dental sealants are important for children.
What Is Fluoride Treatment?
Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and helps it resist acid from sugars and bacteria. A professional fluoride treatment is quick, and goes on after a cleaning.
How Sealants Are Placed
- 01The tooth is cleaned and dried.
- 02A gentle solution prepares the surface.
- 03The sealant is painted on and set with a special light.
- 04We check your child's bite.
There are no needles and no drilling, so it is comfortable for most children.
Who Should Get Sealants and Fluoride?
Children whose adult molars have come in are often good candidates, and fluoride can benefit children of many ages. We will recommend what suits your child at their check-up.
Before Your Visit
- Let us know about any allergies or health changes.
- Have your child brush before the appointment.
- Bring your insurance or NIHB details.
After Your Treatment
- After fluoride, avoid eating and drinking for the time we advise.
- Avoid very sticky or hard foods that could pull at sealants.
- Keep brushing twice daily and flossing; sealants do not replace good habits.
- We check sealants at regular visits and repair them if needed.
Cost, NIHB and Direct Billing
