Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer screening is a quick but thorough check of your mouth for lesions, tissue changes and irregularities, because early detection makes all the difference. At Edmonton West Dental in NW Edmonton, we include an oral cancer exam as part of your regular dental check-up. It is open to children, teens, adults and seniors who visit our clinic, and we are accepting new patients.

What Oral Cancer Screening Is and Who It Is For

An oral cancer screening is a visual and hands-on exam of the places cancer can appear in the mouth, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, floor and roof of the mouth, and the throat area. It does not hurt, and it usually takes only a few minutes. Anyone who visits the dentist regularly can benefit, and it is especially worth asking about if you notice changes you cannot explain, or if you smoke, drink alcohol or use tobacco products.

Signs to Mention to Your Dentist

  • A sore or ulcer that has not healed in about two weeks
  • White or red patches inside the mouth
  • A lump, thickening or rough area in the cheek, tongue or neck
  • Pain, numbness or tingling in the mouth, tongue or lips
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing or moving the tongue or jaw
  • A persistent sore throat or change in your voice

These signs often have simple causes, but they are always worth having checked. Call us or mention them at your next visit.

How the Screening Works

  1. 01We review your health history and ask about any changes you have noticed.
  2. 02Your dentist looks carefully at the soft tissues of your mouth under good light.
  3. 03Your dentist gently feels the tissues of your jaw, cheeks and neck for lumps or tender areas.
  4. 04If something looks unusual, we explain what we see, may monitor it, and can refer you for further testing when appropriate.

Part of Your Regular Visit

Our oral cancer screening happens at your check-up, alongside your exam, X-ray review and professional cleaning. Because most adults benefit from a dental visit about every six months, your screening can happen regularly without a separate appointment. Our first visit for new patients is a full hour, which gives us time to do it properly.

Before Your Visit

  • Make a note of any sores, patches, lumps or pain you have noticed, and when they started.
  • Tell us about tobacco, alcohol and any changes in your health or medications.
  • Bring your insurance card, or both cards if you have two plans.
  • Brush and floss as usual before you arrive.

After Your Treatment

  • There is no recovery time. You can carry on with your day as normal.
  • If your dentist noticed an area to watch, follow the advice they give you and book any follow-up they suggest.
  • Check your own mouth now and then, and tell us if something changes between visits.
  • Call us if a sore does not heal, or if you notice swelling, lasting pain or bleeding.

Cost, Insurance and Direct Billing

The screening is part of your regular dental visit. We follow the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide, bill major insurance providers directly and confirm your coverage in advance. We also welcome patients covered by NIHB, the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), the Alberta Adult Health Benefit and WCB for approved claims.

What does the dentist look for during an oral cancer exam?

Your dentist looks for lesions, colour changes, lumps, sores that do not heal and other irregularities in the soft tissues of your mouth and throat area.

Who should get an oral cancer screening?

Anyone who visits the dentist can benefit. It is especially worth discussing if you use tobacco, drink alcohol often or have noticed a change in your mouth.

What happens if you find something unusual?

We explain what we see. We may monitor it over time, and we can refer you for further assessment when appropriate. Most changes turn out to be harmless, but checking early is the safest approach.
