Night Guards & Sports Guards
A custom night guard or sports guard is a custom-fitted appliance that protects your teeth from grinding and from sports impacts. Custom guards are far more effective, and far more comfortable, than any over-the-counter option. At Edmonton West Dental in NW Edmonton, we make guards that fit your teeth exactly. We are accepting new patients, so book a night guard appointment if you grind your teeth or play sports.

What Night Guards and Sports Guards Are, and Who Needs Them
A night guard is worn while you sleep to cushion your teeth if you clench or grind them, a habit called bruxism. A sports guard covers your teeth during sports to absorb impact and help protect against chips, breaks and injury to your mouth. You may benefit from a night guard if you grind your teeth. You may benefit from a sports guard if you or your child play contact sports or activities with a risk of mouth injury.
Signs You May Need a Night Guard
- A sore or tight jaw, especially in the morning
- Headaches when you wake up
- Worn, flat or chipped teeth
- Tooth sensitivity with no clear cause
- A partner who hears you grinding at night
How Your Custom Guard Is Made
- 01Exam. Your dentist checks your teeth, bite and jaw, and explains whether a night guard or sports guard is right for you.
- 02Impressions. Precise records of your teeth are taken.
- 03Fabrication. Your guard is made to fit your teeth.
- 04Fitting. We check the fit and your bite and adjust it for comfort.
- 05Follow-up. We check how it feels and make changes if needed.
Why Custom Beats Over-the-Counter
Store-bought guards are generic. They can be bulky, may not stay in place and do not match your bite. A custom guard is thinner, more comfortable and fits your teeth closely, so you are more likely to wear it. It can also help protect crowns, veneers and fillings from damage.
Before Your Visit
- Tell us about any jaw pain, headaches, clenching or grinding, and sports you play.
- Bring your insurance card, or both cards if you have two plans.
- If you have an existing guard, bring it with you.
- Let us know about any recent dental work, and any health conditions or sleep problems.
After Your Treatment
- Wear the guard as your dentist advises. It can feel unusual for the first few nights.
- Clean it with a soft toothbrush and cool water after each use, and avoid hot water that can warp it.
- Store it in its case, away from heat and pets.
- Bring it to your check-ups so we can check the fit and condition.
- Call us if it causes sore spots or jaw pain, no longer fits well, or cracks.
Cost, Insurance and Direct Billing
We follow the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide and tell you the cost before your guard is made. Coverage depends on your plan, so we verify your benefits and bill major insurance providers directly where coverage applies. We also welcome patients covered by NIHB, and we offer flexible payment options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need a custom night guard instead of a store-bought one?
A custom guard fits your teeth exactly. It is more comfortable and effective than over-the-counter options.
How do I know if I grind my teeth?
Common signs include a sore jaw, morning headaches, worn or chipped teeth and sensitivity. Your dentist can check at your exam.
How long does a night guard last?
It depends on how hard you grind and how you care for it. Bring it to check-ups so your dentist can tell you when it needs replacing.
Is a custom sports guard worth it for kids?
If your child plays contact or high-impact sports, a custom sports guard helps protect their teeth. We can adjust or replace guards as their mouths grow.
How do I clean my night guard?
Brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and cool water after each use, and store it in its case. Avoid hot water.
Is a night guard covered by insurance?
Some plans cover part of the cost. We verify your benefits and tell you your portion before we begin.
