What Dentures Are and Who Needs Them

A complete denture replaces all of the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. A partial denture replaces some teeth and clips onto your remaining natural teeth. Dentures may suit you if you have lost several teeth because of decay, gum disease or injury, or if you want a removable option that restores your ability to chew and smile.

Signs You May Want to Talk About Dentures

  • Several missing teeth that make chewing difficult
  • Teeth that are loose, badly damaged or can no longer be repaired
  • An existing denture that is loose, worn or uncomfortable
  • Difficulty speaking clearly or confidence lost because of gaps

Your Denture Options

  • Complete dentures for patients who have lost all the teeth in an arch.
  • Partial dentures for patients who still have healthy natural teeth to hold the denture in place.

If you would like to compare dentures with other ways of replacing missing teeth, we can also explain dental implants and bridges at your consultation.

How the Denture Process Works

  1. 01Consultation and exam. Your dentist reviews your mouth, your health and your goals.
  2. 02Impressions and measurements. Precise records are taken so your denture is made to fit you.
  3. 03Try-in and adjustments. We check the fit, bite and appearance and make changes where needed.
  4. 04Final fitting. Your finished dentures are placed and adjusted for comfort.
  5. 05Follow-up. We see you again to fine-tune the fit as you get used to them.

Comfort and Sedation Options

If extractions are needed before dentures, or if you feel anxious, ask us about sedation dentistry. Comfort options are available, and IV sedation is offered without a referral.

Before Your Visit

  • Bring your insurance card, or both cards if you have two plans.
  • If you wear a denture now, bring it with you.
  • Tell us about your health history and medications.
  • Write down what you would like to improve, such as comfort, appearance or chewing.
  • If you have recent X-rays from another dental office, let us know when you book.

After Your Treatment

  • Expect an adjustment period. New dentures can feel unfamiliar, and mild soreness or extra saliva is common at first.
  • Start with soft foods and cut food into small pieces. Add firmer foods as you get comfortable.
  • Clean your dentures daily with a soft brush and a denture cleaner, and remove them at night as your dentist advises.
  • Handle them carefully over a towel or basin of water so they do not break if dropped.
  • Book follow-up adjustments, and call us if you have sore spots, loose fit, swelling, fever or lasting pain.

Cost, Insurance and Direct Billing

We follow the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide and give you a written plan and estimate before treatment. We bill major insurance providers directly, and we welcome patients covered by NIHB, the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), the Alberta Adult Health Benefit and WCB for approved claims. Some programs require pre-authorization for dentures, and we handle that process with you. We also offer flexible payment options.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between complete and partial dentures?

Complete dentures replace all teeth in an arch. Partial dentures replace some teeth and attach to your remaining natural teeth.

How long does it take to get used to dentures?

Most people need a few weeks to adjust. Speaking and eating can feel different at first. Follow-up adjustments help the fit improve.

How do I clean and care for my dentures?

Clean them daily with a soft brush and a denture cleaner, rinse after eating and remove them as your dentist advises. Keep up your regular check-ups too.

Are dentures covered by insurance or CDCP?

Many plans cover part of the cost, and CDCP covers dentures with pre-authorization. We confirm your coverage and handle the paperwork.

Can I replace missing teeth another way?

Yes. Options include dental implants and bridges. Your dentist can explain how they compare for your situation.

What should I do if my denture is loose or broken?

Call us. Do not try to repair it at home. We can assess it and tell you the best next step.
