Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to come in, usually in the late teens or early twenties. Some grow in without trouble. Others get stuck, crowd your smile or become infected. At Edmonton West Dental in NW Edmonton, we look at your X-rays with you first and explain whether removal is the right choice.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Urgent Dental Care

Does Every Wisdom Tooth Need to Come Out?

No. Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed. We recommend extraction when a tooth is causing problems or is likely to.

Signs You May Need Wisdom Teeth Removed

  • Pain or pressure at the back of your jaw
  • Swollen, red or tender gums around a wisdom tooth
  • A tooth that is only partly through the gum
  • Repeated infection or bad taste
  • Decay in a wisdom tooth or the tooth next to it
  • Crowding or shifting of your other teeth

  3. 03Removal with the area numbed, with sedation options discussed beforehand if you are anxious.
  4. 04Aftercare instructions and a follow-up if needed.

Before Your Visit

  • Tell us about your medications, allergies and health history.
  • Follow any eating or drinking instructions we give you, especially if sedation is planned.
  • Arrange a ride home if you will be sedated.
  • Plan to rest for the remainder of the day.

After Your Treatment

  • Bite gently on gauze to control bleeding as instructed.
  • Use cold packs on your cheek for swelling during the first day.
  • Eat soft, cool foods and avoid straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing for the first few days so the blood clot stays in place.
