Gum Disease and Bad Breath
What Gum Disease Is and Who Needs Treatment
Gum disease starts when bacteria in plaque and tartar irritate the gums. Early on it is called gingivitis and shows up as red, swollen or bleeding gums. If left untreated it can progress to periodontitis, where the tissue and bone that support your teeth are affected. Anyone can develop gum disease, and anyone with warning signs should have it checked.
Signs to Watch For
- Bleeding when you brush or floss
- Swollen, red or tender gums
- Persistent bad breath or a bad taste
- Gums that are pulling away from the teeth
- Loose teeth or a change in your bite
Not sure whether you have gum disease? Early gingivitis can be painless, which is why regular check-ups matter.
Treatment Options
- Professional cleaning and better home care for early gingivitis, which is fully reversible.
- Scaling and root planing, a deep clean below the gumline for more established gum disease.
- Medication where your dentist recommends it to help control infection.
- Specialist referral when your case needs more advanced care.
- Ongoing maintenance to keep your gums stable after treatment.
More advanced periodontitis can be managed and stabilised, though it cannot be fully reversed.
How Your Treatment Works
- 01Gum exam. Your dentist checks your gums, measures how they sit around your teeth and reviews your X-rays.
- 02Diagnosis and plan. You receive a clear explanation and a plan made for you.
- 03Treatment. This may include a deep cleaning, which can be done over more than one visit.
- 04Home care coaching. We show you how to clean at home in a way that protects your gums.
- 05Follow-up. We check your healing and set a maintenance schedule.
Comfort and Sedation Options
We numb the area thoroughly before treatment. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are available for anxious patients or complex periodontal work. Ask us what is right for you.
Before Your Visit
- Tell us about any symptoms and when they started.
- Share your health history and medications, and tell us if you have diabetes or smoke, since both affect gum health.
- Bring your insurance card, or both cards if you have two plans.
- Keep brushing and flossing gently as usual. Do not stop even if your gums bleed.
After Your Treatment
- Mild tenderness for a day or two is common and resolves on its own.
- Gums can feel sore, and teeth may be sensitive to hot and cold. Eat softer foods if you need to.
- Rinse gently with warm salt water if your dentist suggests it.
- Keep brushing softly twice a day and cleaning between your teeth daily.
- Follow the aftercare instructions we give you, and attend your follow-up visits.
- Call us if you have swelling, fever, lasting pain or bleeding that does not settle.
Cost, Insurance and Direct Billing
Periodontal treatment is covered under many insurance plans, and we handle the paperwork, including direct billing to NIHB and insurance. The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) covers periodontal treatment subject to plan guidelines. We follow the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide and tell you your portion before treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is gum disease reversible?
Early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) is fully reversible with a professional clean and improved home care. More advanced periodontitis can be managed and stabilised, though it cannot be fully reversed.
How can I tell if I have gum disease?
Common signs include bleeding when brushing, swollen or red gums, persistent bad breath, gum recession or loose teeth. Book a check-up if you notice any of them.
Does gum disease treatment hurt?
We numb the area thoroughly. Most patients feel mild tenderness for a day or two afterward, which resolves on its own.
What causes receding gums?
Gum disease, brushing too hard, grinding and genetics can all play a part. Your dentist can find the cause and suggest the right treatment.
Should I see a general dentist or a periodontist?
Many cases can be managed with a general dentist, and we refer you to a specialist when your case needs more advanced care.
Is periodontal treatment covered by insurance?
It is covered under many insurance plans. We verify your benefits and handle the paperwork.

Scaling & Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a deep-clean procedure that removes tartar buildup from below the gumline and smooths root surfaces to discourage future bacterial attachment. At Edmonton West Dental in NW Edmonton, we offer deep teeth cleaning for patients with gum disease, whether it is early or more established. We are accepting new patients, and you will not be judged if it has been a while since your last cleaning.

At Edmonton West Dental in NW Edmonton, we find the source and address it directly, rather than masking the symptom. We are accepting new patients, and our approach is judgment-free. If you are tired of chewing gum and mouthwash that do not solve the problem, book a bad breath consultation.
