What Sedation Dentistry Is and Who It Is For

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help you relax during treatment. Sedation can help if you feel anxious about the dentist, have a strong gag reflex, find it hard to sit through long appointments, or need more complex work such as extractions or several procedures at once. It is also a helpful option for patients who have avoided the dentist because of fear. Your dentist will review your health history first to confirm that sedation is safe and suitable for you.

Sedation Options

  • Nitrous oxide: a mild option breathed in through a small mask that helps you relax and wears off quickly. It is available for children with parental consent and a clear explanation.
  • Oral sedation: a medication taken before your appointment to help you feel calm.
  • IV sedation: available with no referral required. Dr. Greg ZoBell is certified in IV sedation.

Our dentists will explain the differences, and you can choose together. Our blog post on oral sedation vs IV sedation can also help you compare them.

Treatments Where Sedation Can Help

How Your Sedation Visit Works

  1. 01Consultation. We discuss your anxiety, your health history and your medications.
  2. 02Choosing your option. Your dentist recommends the sedation that suits you and your treatment.
  3. 03Instructions. We give you clear instructions about eating, medications and getting home.
  4. 04Your treatment. You are monitored and kept comfortable during your treatment.
  5. 05Recovery. We make sure you are ready before you leave and review aftercare with you or the person who is with you.

Before Your Visit

  • Tell us about your health history, allergies, medications and anything you take regularly.
  • Follow your dentist's instructions about eating and drinking before your appointment.
  • Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you if you are having oral or IV sedation.
  • Wear comfortable clothing, and tell us if you are or might be pregnant.
  • For children, a parent or guardian must give consent and have the sedation explained.

After Your Treatment

  • Rest for the remainder of the day. Do not drive, work, make major decisions or use machinery until your dentist says it is safe.
  • Have a responsible adult stay with you until the effects have worn off.
  • Start with fluids and light foods, and follow the aftercare for your dental treatment.
  • Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, while oral and IV sedation can take longer.
  • Call us if you have trouble waking, severe nausea, swelling, fever or lasting pain.

Cost, Insurance and Direct Billing

We follow the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide and tell you what treatment and sedation will cost before we begin. Coverage for sedation varies by plan, so we verify your benefits, bill major insurance providers directly where coverage applies and explain your portion up front. We also offer flexible payment options.
