What a Check-Up and Cleaning Is, and Who Needs It
A dental check-up is a full exam of your teeth, gums and mouth. A professional cleaning removes plaque and tartar that daily brushing and flossing cannot reach. Together they protect your teeth and gums and give your dentist a chance to spot small problems early. Nearly everyone benefits from regular visits, including children, teens, adults and seniors, and including people who feel their teeth are healthy.
What Happens at Your Visit
- 01Health history review. We ask about your general health, medications and any concerns.
- 02Exam. Your dentist checks your teeth, gums, bite and the soft tissues of your mouth.
- 03X-rays when needed. We use digital X-rays, which give sharper images right away and use up to 80% less radiation than traditional film.
- 04[Oral cancer screening](/services/general-dentistry/oral-cancer-screening/). We look for lesions, tissue changes and irregularities as part of your visit.
- 05Professional cleaning. Tartar and plaque are removed and your teeth are polished.
- 06Your plan. We explain what we found and what, if anything, needs attention.
How Often Should You Have a Dental Check-Up?
Most adults benefit from a check-up and clean every six months. If you have a higher risk of gum disease or decay, we may recommend visiting more often, and we will tell you what makes sense for your mouth. If it has been a while since your last cleaning, that is completely fine. We are here to help, not to judge.
Your First Visit as a New Patient
We block a full hour for every first visit. That is real time to listen, examine and plan, so you never feel like a slot in a schedule. A free take-home teeth whitening kit is currently available with new adult patient exams and hygiene appointments. Offers can change, so please ask our front desk when you book.
Before Your Visit
- Bring your insurance card. If you have two plans, bring both so we can coordinate benefits.
- Bring a list of your current medications and tell us about any changes to your health.
- If you have recent X-rays from another dental office, let us know when you book.
- Brush and floss as usual before you come in.
- Write down any questions or concerns, such as sensitivity, bleeding gums or bad breath.
- Arrive a few minutes early to complete your forms, or fill them in ahead of time from our patient forms page.
After Your Treatment
- Your teeth may feel slightly sensitive or your gums a little tender for a day. This is normal and usually passes quickly.
- You can eat and drink normally once any numbing, if used, has worn off.
- Keep brushing twice a day and flossing daily. Your dentist or hygienist can show you techniques that suit your mouth.
- Follow any home care advice we give you, and book your next visit when you leave.
- Call us if you notice swelling, fever, lasting pain or bleeding that does not settle.
Cost, Insurance and Direct Billing
We follow the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide, so pricing is transparent and predictable. We bill major insurance providers directly and confirm your coverage before treatment, so you only pay your portion. We also welcome patients covered by NIHB, the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), the Alberta Adult Health Benefit and WCB for approved claims. Without coverage, we explain costs before we start and offer flexible payment options.
